Visian Implantable Contact Lens

Vision correction solutions that work for one patient may not be the best fit for someone else. That’s why our eye doctors at Dr. Black’s Eye Associates offer our patients a range of options for people who want freedom from glasses or single-use contacts. Visian implantable contact lenses, or ICLs, are an alternative to the laser vision correction surgery such as LASIK. ICL is performed at our Jeffersonville, IN, Vision Surgery Center.

What Is an Implantable Lens?

Unlike traditional contact lenses that lay on the eye’s surface, the Visian ICL sits between the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the natural lens and can remain there indefinitely. For people with moderate to severe nearsightedness, the Visian ICL represents a treatment alternative to both LASIK surgery and refractive lens procedures such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Diagram of the EyeThe implantable lens used in the procedure is biocompatible, meaning it functions with the natural eye without irritation. The Visian ICL has a track record of safety and effectiveness dating back decades since it was first used in Europe in 1997. It was approved for use in the U.S. in 2005, and 99% of patients involved in a clinical trial said they were satisfied with the improvement in their vision.

What Are the Benefits of Visian ICLs?

If you have moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness), there are many advantages to getting implantable contact lenses for vision correction. Those benefits include:

  • Immediate improvement in your vision at all distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contacts.
  • Improved night vision.
  • Protection from ultraviolet (UV) rays built into the biocompatible lens.
  • Efficient outpatient procedure (typically takes 20 to 30 minutes) with minimal discomfort, and most people can resume daily activities in just a few short days with clearer vision.
  • Peace of mind knowing that even though it’s designed to be permanent, the lens can be removed or replaced.
  • By not removing and reshaping corneal tissue, the Visian ICL procedure does not induce dry eye syndrome.

Patients enjoy sharper, clearer, and more vivid vision with enhanced depth and dimension after getting Visian implantable contacts. Of course, some of the primary benefits of vision correction procedures are the freedom from the daily maintenance of traditional contacts or worrying about losing glasses and the ease of participating in active hobbies such as swimming or other sports.

How Is a Visian ICL Procedure Performed?

The outpatient procedure begins with your eye doctor numbing the eyes with topical anesthetic drops to ensure your comfort. The doctor then creates a micro opening through which he or she inserts the lens into the eye with an injector. The lens unfolds and fits into place after it’s injected, completing the procedure. No sutures are needed because the tiny opening seals itself. Patients notice an immediate and significant improvement in their vision.

Who Is a Good Candidate for ICL?

Men and women between the ages of 21 and 45 who have been diagnosed with moderate to severe nearsightedness, whether or not astigmatism is present, can consider having this procedure. It’s an alternative vision correction procedure for patients considering LASIK who may have corneas that are too thin or prescriptions that are too high. If you have both astigmatism and nearsightedness, your doctor may recommend Visian® Toric ICL.

There are certain conditions that may prevent you from getting implantable contact lenses. These include:

  • A significant change in your vision correction prescription in the past 6 months
  • Being pregnant or nursing
  • A diagnosis of uncontrolled dry eye or blepharitis

An eye exam may reveal certain physiological conditions with your eyes that may also mean you’re not a good candidate for the procedure.

Thousands of men and women have freed themselves from relying on eyeglasses or contact lenses by choosing to get Visian ICL procedures.
